Rubbertoe Replicas is proud to present the FULLY LICENSED 11th & 12th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver!
This iconic piece is an exact replica of the MOST UP TO DATE version that our master prop maker, Nick Robatto, has made for the series CURRENTLY BEING FILMED here in Cardiff, starring Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor.
Our sonic replica is crafted from over eighty componants and from a wide variety of materials including copper, brass, aluminium, leather and resin, with the white resin section being cast from the original prop made in 2009. The metal pieces are precision cut by CNC, and all the rest of the parts are hand made and assembled in the Rubbertoe workshops. The sonic also features a working LED light made in exactly the same way as the screen used prop.
The 11th & 12th Doctor's Sonic comes with its own custom made stand with a numbered plaque signed by Nick Robatto, and a beautiful wooden presentation box.
The 11th and 12th Doctor's Sonic is truly an iconic and beautiful collector’s piece, and as a genuine, licensed piece made and signed by the prop’s original maker, will no doubt hold and even increase it’s value well into the future.

Nick has been responsible for personally making on screen versions of every sonic screwdriver that has been featured on the show since its re-launch in 2004. The 11th Doctor’s sonic has altered very little cosmetically since its first appearance in the hands of Matt Smith in 2009. However, it has had a few wee alterations for the better since Nick (in the time honored TV prop-making tradition) was first handed a drawing of concept artist Dan Walker’s design and was told he had a week to make it! To read a more in depth account of the history and evolution of the 11th Doctor’s Sonic, click here.
Since the beginning of series seven the end cap on the on screen prop (which originally flipped open to reveal a red button) has been made into one solid piece. The original purpose of the button has long been redundant; as per the design, it was there to turn on the ‘action’ of the sonic screwdriver (i.e the light) and Matt wielded it, CSI mag-lite style, over the shoulder. However this was soon found to be impractical for the way the prop needed to be used, so a side button was added, and Matt’s more dynamic, pointing action with the sonic was born.
Another subtle alteration is the re-engineered internals of the sonic. When the prop was originally made, the activation/action of the sonic was intended to be a gradual pushing with the thumb to open and extend the claws that encase the green bulb at the tip of the sonic. However, in keeping with Matt’s more frenetic acting style, he preferred the quick flick that has become his signature move with the prop. Although the prop was not originally designed or made with this action in mind, Nick has since improved the sonic’s ‘flickability’ by threading the top copper cap and re engineering the internal movement.
The brass rivets holding the copper struts to the main body of the sonic were not present on the mark one sonic, but have subsequently been added to improve the stability of the prop when being flicked.
Our fully licensed sonic replicas are made as per these specifications, making them the most up to date and current versions that you could possibly get. All our sonics are made here in South Wales (as are all Rubbertoe products). Our workshops are a stone’s throw from the BBC Studios in Roath Lock, Cardiff, where Doctor Who is filmed. We are (and have been since 2004) prop makers for the show and have been responsible for making many of the new and exciting props for the latest series, not least a shiny new sonic for the shiny (ish) new Doctor!
RUBBERTOE REPLICAS SONIC SCREWDRIVER
As this is an exact prop replica (as we all know, in the land of TV prop sounds are added in post production) the sonic does not feature sound as standard. However, if sound is something you desperately desire in your sonic, please contact us and we can incorporate this for an extra cost of £140 (another reason for omitting sound as standard was to prevent the cost of the sonic from becoming prohibitively high.) We have done our best to make both the TV prop and our replica as strong as the design itself allows (read more on the recent modifications to the filming prop here). However, please be respectful of your sonic and don't abuse it (i.e with overly violent flicking); remember that your sonic is a prop replica not a toy! However, if the sonic is treated with the respect it deserves then it will serve you well.
