Rubbertoe Replicas is pleased to present a faithful replica of the brand-new sonic screwdriver, designed for the regenerated Fourteenth Doctor, played by David Tennant. The Fourteenth Doctor’s sonic was principally designed by Doctor Who designer Phil Sims and his team. When the team started thinking about design concepts for the Fourteenth Doctor’s sonic, they decided to completely immerse themselves in Doctor Who by re-watching the whole series from beginning to end, from William Hartnell through to the present day. They also got hold of all the previous sonic screwdriver toys and replicas in order to absorb the language of the sonics that had come before.
An astonishing sixty-seven initial design sketches and concepts were created to try and create a design that captured something of the essence of previous incarnations of this iconic prop, whilst remaining something fresh, new and unique itself. Sixty-seven ideas were eventually whittled down, and with tweaks and input from Phil Sims and the show’s producers, the final design was eventually locked down.
From inception to finished prop, the process took around four months to complete, beginning with initial sketches in January 2022, and ending with the very first prop screen test in April.
There were four production sonics made by the incredible in-house props department at Bad Wolf Studios run by Barry Jones. The parts for the production sonics were drawn up on CAD by Michael Van Kesteren, and the majority of the metal parts were CND’d. Made from brass, aluminium, leather, resin, stainless, nickel, with complex electronics and more than seventy individual parts, the production sonic props were a collaborative effort from head of department Barry Jones, and prop-makers Penny Howarth, Paul Mazonas, Charles Fletcher, and Stephanie Howell. Our own chief propmaker Nick Robatto was also called in to work on the sonics during the latter stages of construction, as well as readying one of the production sonics for exhibition at the San Diego Comic-Con.
The sheer attention to detail in the design of this piece, which seems to perfectly encapsulate the soul of what is arguably one of the most beloved and iconic Doctor Who props of all time, as well as perfectly celebrating sixty years of Doctor Who history, is what makes the Fourteenth Sonic Screwdriver (in our humble opinion here at Rubbertoe) one of the best sonics yet.
The Fourteenth Sonic is made from over sixty parts, using aluminium, brass, leather, resin, stainless steel, and nickel, as well as electronic components. All CNC’d parts are made locally here in South Wales. The Fourteenth sonic is assembled, wired and art-worked by hand, in our workshops here in South Wales, UK. The leather sleeve on each sonic is also hand stitched by us here in our workshop.
The crackle detail on the sonic is applied using a four-stage process: degreasing, etching, gloss, decal application, and is finally sealed using a clear lacquer.
The Fourteenth Sonic features a main light up emitter utilising an L.E.D rope, with micro L.E.D’s in each petal. The sonic opens and extends using a push-up motion from the button situated on the main body. The button also activates the lights on the sonic. When activated using the push-up button the main emitter carriage extends and the petals spring out – the sonic is reset to the original closed position by gently manually pushing the emitter head down by hand.
As always, the sonic will come with its own display base, made from machined aluminium featuring neon blue Perspex rings and a laser etched plaque on the bottom. Along with a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
